New Orleans InfoThere is a lot of effort going on to rebuild the great city of New Orleans and much of the effort is focused on building new homes in the city. The devastation of the 9th Ward, a low-income area in the lowest part of the city, was well documented by the media. This area remains largely vacant with very few residents. There are notable figures working to rebuild the city including Brad Pitt's effort to build 150 green homes, to which he donated $5 million of his own money. Harry Connick Jr. is also associated with the rebuilding efforts in New Orleans, well publicized through commercials, particularly the Musician's village. The Musicians' Village is the largest rebuilding effort to be undertaken thus far in post-Katrina New Orleans and was initiated by musicians Harry Connick Jr. and Branford Marsalis. The Village is intended to provide housing for New Orleans musicians who lost their home in the Hurricane Katrina tradgedy. The two artists teamed up with the local and national Habitat for Humanity organization's to facilitate the effort. The New Orleans area is now estimated to have 890,000 residents up from a low of 550,000 in 2005. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, there were 1,400,000 residents in the New Orleans Metropolitan Statistical Area. Finding housing in New Orleans continues to be a challenge and the slow pace of reconstruction and redevelopment has been frustrating to many who care about the future of the city. |
